Responsible research and biosafety

A clear statement of the project’s scope, the evidence available for safety claims and the status of approval documentation.

Scope of our work

Our experimental work focuses on in-vitro assays with EcN, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium SL1344, and the established L-929 cell line. Our experimental results do not include patient recruitment, human sample collection, animal experiments or clinical use. Animal models discussed as possible future research are not part of our completed work or the iDEC competition project.

Containment and approvals

The project includes genetically modified bacteria and a proposed Hok/Sok containment switch. Institutional biosafety approvals, a containment validation record and the completed iDEC Responsible Research Form are not yet available in our public documentation. We therefore do not claim that the work was approved or that the switch guarantees environmental safety.

Any laboratory work must remain within the containment, training, and disposal conditions approved by the responsible institution. The iDEC ethics and biosafety requirements state that GMOs and their products must not leave the laboratory. The public record of institutional approvals and competition-form submission remains incomplete.

Human and animal research

Our laboratory results do not include human-participant or animal-study data. We used the established L-929 cell line for an in-vitro assay. A cell-line result does not establish clinical safety. Community interviews and questionnaires are described separately in the Community records; their consent and ethics documentation must also be considered. iDEC prohibits animal testing and self-experimentation, and requires appropriate ethics clearance for research involving people or human samples, including surveys.
