Safety

Overview

Taking into account the critical role that safety plays in the experimental process, we have made safety a top priority throughout the experimental phase. Concurrently, we have continuously assessed potential safety risks throughout the project and further evaluated safety issues as we refined our plans. Moreover, we have conducted experiments in strict adherence to both laboratory-specific safety regulations and national safety standards.

Subject

The materials utilized throughout our project undergo stringent selection to ensure their safety for both human health and the environment. We have taken great care to minimize risks by strictly avoiding the use of disease-causing bacteria or hazardous chemicals. The actual products employed in our project also meet stringent safety requirements.
For instance, the strains used, including Escherichia coli Nissle 1917, Escherichia coli DH5α, Y. lipolytica PO1f, and Kluyveromyces marxianus YDU010, all fall under the low-risk Group One category. This classification signifies their minimal impact on humans and the environment.

Laboratory

Prior to conducting any experiments, our team members receive comprehensive safety training to ensure that they are equipped to work safely in the laboratory. We strictly adhere to relevant safety regulations and guidelines under the supervision of our consultants and PI. All experimenters diligently make use of proper protective equipment, such as laboratory gloves and safety goggles during experiments.
We possess complete disinfection and sterilization equipment and follow strict procedures to maintain the safety of everyone involved. For instance, before utilizing the ultra-clean table, we switch on the UV lamp for 15 minutes to disinfect the surface. Additionally, we frequently disinfect our gloves and related articles using alcohol during operation. To ensure safe storage and handling, we correctly label and place the reagents and instruments used in accordance with applicable regulations.
Once an experiment is complete, we prioritize the swift and thorough sterilization of both chemical and biological waste to mitigate potential risks in the laboratory.

Guidelines

We have conducted all of our experiments in strict accordance with the General Guidelines for Biosafety in Microbiology and Biomedical Laboratories (China CDC). Furthermore, we have established our laboratory safety regulations that must be followed at all times to ensure the well-being of our team members and maintain a safe working environment.
These regulations cover a variety of topics, including but not limited to, the identification of a responsible person for overall safety measures, guidelines for fire and power safety, and specific rules governing the handling of hazardous chemical reagents, from purchase to storage. Proper and appropriate disposal methods for both chemical and biological waste are strictly adhered to as dictated by relevant safety guidelines. Lastly, biosafety measures are ingrained into all aspects of our experimental design and implementation to mitigate any potential risks.
