We communicated with Lian chuang Biological Company (Anhui, China) at the beginning of our project design. We got the market situation of N-Boc-pyrrolidone from them. We also learned that they use phenylethylaldehyde reductase for this reaction, but the results were not as good as they should be. Both the reaction rate and the chiral selectivity were far below the needs of industry. Therefore, we conceived the subject of this work during our chat - the production of N-Boc-pyrrolidinol with a more efficient enzyme.

Directed evolution is a useful tool. We believe that such conversations with biomedical companies can provide insight into the needs of production life practices in order to design more practical topics for directed evolution. The USTC team will likely maintain long-term contact and collaboration with the company afterwards.
