Safety

Overview

In view of the important role of safety in the experimental process, we considered safety as a very important consideration in the experimental design process. Meanwhile, we continued to consider safety risks throughout the project, and further reviewed safety issues in the process of adjusting the plan. We also carry out experiments in strict accordance with the safety regulations of the laboratory and the national safety regulations.

Subject

The materials we use in the process of the project are strictly selected, harmless to the human body and the environment. Our project is basically carried out at very low risk, because no disease-causing bacteria or dangerous chemicals are used in the process. The actual products we use also meet the requirements of safety issues.

We use strains including Escherichia coli BL21, Escherichia coli DH5 alpha, W303a (W303-1 a) Chemically Competent Cell, Bacillus subtilis WB800N. They all belong to risk Group One, which is low risk to humans and the environment.

Laboratory

Before conducting experiments, all our experimenters have received systematic experimental safety training. For example, we must properly wear experimental gloves and safety goggles when doing experiments. In addition, all of us are familiar with the relevant safety regulations and adhere to them under the supervision of our consultants and PI. We have complete disinfection, sterilization equipment and procedures. For example, we will turn on the UV lamp for 15 minutes before using the ultra-clean table every time, and use alcohol to disinfect gloves and related articles during operation. The reagents and instruments we use will be correctly marked and placed in accordance with the regulations. After the completion of the experiment, we will concentrate on sterilizing the chemical and biological waste to avoid potential risks in the laboratory

Guidelines

All the experiments we performed were in accordance with the General Guidelines for Biosafety in Microbiology and Biomedical Laboratories (China CDC). In addition, we have established the safety regulations that our laboratory must follow.
These include, but are not limited to:
  1. Responsible person.
  2. Fire safety.
  3. Power safety.
  4. Safety rules for hazardous chemical reagents, including purchase, storage, etc.
  5. Proper disposal of chemical and biological wastes.
  6. Biosafety.
